New

Use this menu selection to launch a new scanning session or to clear the viewing window. You will be prompted to save any file that is currently open in the software.

Open...

This menu selection allows the user to open an existing scan or set of scans in the Echo, CyScan or PLY file formats. Once the user selects this item, a dialog box will open asking the user to select a file or group of files to be opened. Highlight the desired scan by clicking on it with mouse Button 1, then press the Open button to load the scan file into CyScan.

Save

Choose this menu item to write the current scan to the hard disk for processing at a later time. Upon selection of this item, the user will be presented with the Save Dialog Box. Navigate to the desired directory, enter the name of the file into the Filename section of the dialog box and press the Save button.

This action will save the file in the Echo file format. See below for more information on the Cyberware Echo file format.

Save As CyScan

This menu selection allows the user to save a scan in the CyScan file format. The CyScan file format is useful for viewing and manipulation within the CyScan application only in special circumstances, such as when troubleshooting a problem under the guidance of Cyberware Technical Support.

To save a scan in this format, choose Save As CyScan... from the File menu, then enter the new file name in the File name field of the dialog box. Lastly, press the Save button.

Save As Echo

This menu selection allows the user to save a scan in the Echo file format. The Echo file format is Cyberware's standard file format for single scan files. Sample I/O routines, as well as source code for some basic conversion utilities can be found at the Cyberware FTP site. Feel free to download and peruse the code.

To save a scan in this format, choose Save As Echo... from the menu, then enter the new file name in the File name field of the dialog box and press the Save button.

Save As Ply

This menu selection allows the user to save an image in the RMap Ply file format. This type of Ply file is the most widely used by Cyberware. All recent Cyberware software uses this format, which is a tessellated triangle mesh type file. The Ply file format specification is available from Stanford University's Graphics Lab.

To save a scan in this format, choose this item from the menu, then enter the new file name in the File name field of the dialog box and press the Save button.

Merge...

This menu item will open the Merge window, which contains options for merging scans on multiple head scanners, such as the Head & Face Scanner (Model PX), Whole Body Scanner (Model WBX) and Whole Body Scanner (Model WB4).

Merge Windows

There are four options for the merge, described as follows:

ProgramMethodDescription
PlyEditAutomaticAutomatic scan merging, resulting in a complete, single PLY file with holes. There is no user interaction required.
PlyEditInterfaceSemi-Automatic merging with control over the automatic hole filling routines, resulting in a single, complete PLY file with no holes. Some user interaction is required.
CyPieAutomaticAutomatic scan merging resulting in a single medium to low resolution PLY file with holes. No user interaction is required.
CyPieInterfaceSemi-Automatic scan merging resulting in a single medium to low resolution PLY file with holes. Some user interaction is required.

The Merge Process

The stitching together of multiple scan meshes is a four-stage process, which sometimes is seen in the bottom left corner of the 3D window as "S", "M", "E" and "P". These four letters represent the original hotkeys used in the legacy, GUI-free version of CyEat, but now these commands are driven from the Merge buttons in the Merge window.

"S" — Apply confidence values/weights to all vertexes, based upon the distance of that point from edges and/or holes and the point's surface normal. Points near edges or holes are given a low weighting value, as are points at grazing angles to the camera.

"M" — At every point, overlapping points from other cameras are searched for and a weighted average is then calculated for the new point position. If there are no overlapping points, then the new point doesn't move. If the overlapping point is near an edge, the new point doesn't move much since the overlapping point has a low confidence weighting from the first, "S", stage. At the end of this stage, all meshes will be perfectly inter-mixed, but still overlapping.

"E" — The edge of each mesh is eaten back, one row of faces at a time, until there are no overlapping points. At the end of this stage there will be no overlapping points and just a narrow, one-face-wide gap separating the meshes.

"P" — The one-face-wide gaps are stitched together, creating a single, unified mesh.

Exit

Use this selection to quit the CyScan program. Please note that any unsaved scans will be deleted. Ensure that you have saved the scans by selecting Save from the File menu. As an added protection, the software will prompt the user if there are unsaved scans loaded into the program.
